ABB IRB Series Guide: Which Robot for Which Job

Xpert Robotics Engineering Team6 min read

A practical reference for the ABB IRB robot lineup — from the compact IRB 1200 to the heavy-duty IRB 6700. Payload, reach, and application recommendations for each model.

ABB's IRB lineup spans from 3kg tabletop robots to 800kg heavy industrial machines. Choosing the wrong model costs money in over-engineering or under-capability. Here is a practical guide based on what we deploy most frequently in Israeli manufacturing.

Light Payload (3–20kg): IRB 1100, IRB 1200, IRB 1300

Best for:

  • IRB 1100 (4kg / 475mm) — electronics assembly, small component handling, inspection
  • IRB 1200 (7kg / 700mm) — machine tending, small press loading, assembly
  • IRB 1300 (11kg / 1,400mm) — pick-and-place, conveyor picking, long-reach assembly

Medium Payload (20–60kg): IRB 2600, IRB 4600

Workhorses of manufacturing:

  • IRB 2600 (20kg / 1,650mm) — arc welding, machine tending, material handling. Best path accuracy in its class
  • IRB 4600 (60kg / 2,050mm) — palletizing, automotive, press tending. Direct FANUC M-710 competitor

Heavy Payload (150–800kg): IRB 6700, IRB 8700

Heavy industry:

  • IRB 6700 (235kg / 2,650mm) — heavy palletizing, foundry, press shops
  • IRB 8700 (800kg / 3,500mm) — largest ABB robot. Casting, forging, heavy material handling

Cobots: GoFa CRB 15000, YuMi IRB 14000

Human-collaborative:

  • GoFa CRB 15000 (5kg / 950mm) — force sensing on all joints, safe for human contact
  • YuMi IRB 14000 (0.5kg / arm, dual-arm) — electronics assembly, small-part handling. Unique dual-arm design
